Family 'devastated' by death of girl, 9, as man charged with murder

The family of a nine-year-old girl who died after being found seriously injured in Arbroath have said they are "devastated" at her loss, as a man appeared in court charged with her murder.

Minnie Merriman, from West Yorkshire, died in Dundee's Ninewells Hospital on Monday.

A 35-year-old man, who police said was known to the girl, has appeared in court charged with her murder.

Christopher Rice from Wakefield, West Yorkshire, made no plea during an appearance in private at Forfar Sheriff Court and was remanded in custody.

He is expected to appear again in court next week.

Officers were called to the Elliot Industrial Estate in Arbroath shortly after midnight on Monday following reports that a child had been found injured.

In a statement issued through Police Scotland, Minnie's family said: "We are devastated with the loss of our beloved, absolutely incredible, beautiful and brave Minnie Moo.

"Our family asks that our privacy is respected at this extremely difficult time."

Police said they are not looking for anyone else in connection with her death and the other members of the family - who were camping in the area - are being supported by specialist officers.

Det Insp Mike Ness said: "Our thoughts remain with everyone affected by these events, especially Minnie's family.

"A police presence will remain in the area while our inquiries continue."
