RNLIExtensive searches were carried out after reports a man had fallen from a vessel, HM Coastguard said.
The man reportedly fell into the water in Harwich Harbour in Essex at about 14:30 BST on Sunday.
The search, which included RNLI and coastguard boats from Suffolk and Essex, as well as two helicopters, was stood down at about 19:40.
A coastguard spokesperson confirmed no further searches would be carried out unless more information became available.

The force was told "a person had gone missing while out at sea on board a boat in the Harwich area".
