A man who was arrested at an airport on his return from Spain has admitted his part in riots two years ago.

Jamie Latham, 38, of Hartburn Avenue, Stockton-on-Tees, pleaded guilty to violent disorder in Middlesbrough in August 2024.

The town was one of several to be hit by unrest after three girls were killed in Southport, with Cleveland Police saying Latham led a march along Linthorpe Road before becoming involved in violent behaviour towards officers.

After making his admissions at Teesside Crown Court, Latham was remanded into custody ahead of sentencing on 26 August.

Cleveland Police previously said officers received information he would be travelling by plane from Alicante to Newcastle last month.

"So we thought we'd give him a warm welcome with some handcuffs and a ride to police custody in the van," the force said.

At the time, assistant Chief Constable Dave Sutherland said: "This man fled the country to escape justice, but we won't forget what happened that day to our communities, who were subjected to frightening abuse, criminal damage and violence."
