Rescued dog gives birth to record-breaking litter

A dog rescued in South Yorkshire has given birth to the largest litter of puppies ever seen at the RSPCA rescue centre where it is being cared for.

Kila, a five-year-old Cane Corso, arrived at the charity's Chesterfield and North Derbyshire Branch after being rescued on 1 July in Doncaster due to welfare concerns.

Chloe Gee, who works at the branch, said the team found out Kila was pregnant during a vet visit for neutering and she gave birth to 14 puppies six days later.

Gee said as the centre had already been looking after 10 other puppies, Kila's surprise litter was taking its toll, adding: "We'd be really grateful to anyone who can help as we nurture these gorgeous families."

Kila's puppies would all be ready for their new homes from 28 September, Gee said, so any families who were interested could get in touch to register their interest.

Meanwhile, another litter, belonging to four-year-old Susie, rescued from a property in Barnsley where she was living with 15 other dogs, would be available for rehoming from 22 September, staff said.

Gee said: "Both Kila and Susie are so sweet. They're such good mums and we're supporting them as best we can.

"It's been a really busy time, but we're so proud to have 19 beautiful, wiggly puppies who are becoming cheekier and funnier by the day."

Staff at the centre have asked for donations so they can buy toys and other much-needed items for all their residents, as well as donations of puppy food.

"We've got so many wonderful dogs in our care at the moment, all just looking for one thing: a loving, safe home to call their own," Gee said.
