Derelict goods shed likely to be home to food hall
Peterborough City CouncilA derelict railway goods shed is due to be sold by Peterborough City Council and turned into a food hall.
The neglected building in Fletton Quays is being promoted as a catalyst for further regeneration of the area, which includes luxury flats, the HM Passport Office and the unfinished Hilton Hotel.
At next Tuesday's meeting of the council's cabinet, members will be asked to approve the sale for about £300,000 to Brick and Bond Properties, which wants to redevelop the goods shed into a hall incorporating more than a dozen food and drink businesses.
There are also plans to host live music, comedy evenings, cultural events and seasonal markets at the venue.
The council bought the building in 2024 for about £250,000 and later sought an operator to develop a food hall, offering financial support towards design and construction, but that idea did not proceed.
A report drawn up for next week's cabinet meeting states: "The proposed sale will bring a vacant and underutilised heritage asset back into productive use, creating a vibrant destination that supports local businesses, strengthens Peterborough's food and hospitality sector, increases visitor footfall, and provides wider social and community benefits."
Numan Ali Iqbal, the council's cabinet member for growth and regeneration, said: "I am recommending the cabinet agrees to sell the goods shed to this developer, which has a vision to transform this historic building into a vibrant food hall."
