Emergency services were called to the busy road in the early hours of Tuesday

A woman has died after she fell from a bridge on to a major A-road and was hit by a number of vehicles, police have said.

It happened on the A45 near Northampton at 01:50 BST.

Both sides of the dual carriageway were shut between the Wilby Way roundabout and the Bedford Road junction throughout Tuesday.

The road fully reopened by 21:44, National Highways said.

Det Insp Nick Peters, from Northamptonshire Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said he fully appreciated "the impact this closure will have on motorists and the wider community".

He said officers and specialist investigators were "working as quickly as possible to carry out their work and reopen the road as soon as it is safe and appropriate to do so".

"Whilst we are not treating her death as suspicious, it is vital that we carry out a meticulous and thorough investigation."

The force appealed for anyone with information or witnesses to get in touch.

A temporary airspace restriction banning drones from flying would remain in place within 500m (1,640ft) of the A45's Billing Bridge until 16:00 on Wednesday, police added.
