An 18-year-old has died in the River Wye during a Duke of Edinburgh (DoE) Award expedition.

Police confirmed his body was recovered after a search following reports that a "male had entered the water and could not be located" at Glasbury, Powys, on Tuesday at 18:30 BST.

"Our thoughts are with the young person's family, together with all those who were taking part," it said.

"We will do everything we can to support them at this difficult time."

Dyfed-Powys Police said mountain rescue volunteers, firefighters and National Police Air Service were involved in the search.

Investigators were still photographing the scene of the tragedy at 21:30 on Tuesday, focusing on the shingle beach and the river below Glasbury Bridge.

Meanwhile, the teenager's friends were supported by police officers at Glasbury Scout Hut nearby.

The beach at Glasbury - known locally as The Bont - is a popular spot for families, with shallow waters for paddling and deeper pools for swimming below the bridge.

What is the Duke of Edinburgh award?

The DofE Awards is a national programme which encourages personal development in young people.

It has three levels - bronze, silver and gold. For each level, participants need to complete sections including volunteering, learning skills and taking part in a sport, dance or fitness activity.

Expeditions can last for two days at its bronze level, up to four days in length at gold level.
