Humberside Police says it has now lifted a cordon that was in place in the Foresters Way area of Bridlington

An explosive device thought to be a Japanese grenade dating from World War Two has been detonated after it was found on Bridlington's north beach, police said.

A cordon was put in place on Saturday and some residents in the Foresters Way area of the East Yorkshire town were evacuated following the discovery.

Humberside Police said its explosive ordnance disposal team attended, and after examining the device "successfully detonated it on the beach".

A spokesperson confirmed it posed "no further risk or danger to the public" and the cordon had now been lifted.
