Five schools are to be repaired using more than £400k in funding.

Redcar and Cleveland Council said £481,900 was from the Education and Skills Funding Agency, part of the Department for Education, and included £50,800 left over from last year.

The annual allowance is for keeping school buildings safe and in good working order by tackling poor conditions, building compliance, energy efficiency, and health and safety issues.

The pot will be shared between Belmont, Highcliffe, Hummersea, Lockwood, and Newcomen primary schools.

The council maintains six primary and one special school, with the remainder of its schools having been converted into academies and therefore separately funded - according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Belmont and Highcliffe primary schools, in Guisborough, will get investment of £105,000 and £140,000.

Hummersea Primary, in Loftus, will receive £140,000 worth of repairs, while Lockwood Primary and Newcomen Primary, in Redcar, will receive smaller sums of £5,000 each towards repairs.

The rest of the money has been allocated to an emergency works fund, detailed condition surveys and fees.

A report to the council's cabinet also discussed pressures to provide school places which were primarily affecting secondary schools in the east of Redcar, Marske, Saltburn, and Guisborough.

However, it ruled out the building of a new standalone school.

It said: "The delivery of additional school places can only realistically be achieved through working with our academy providers.

"The development of a new school would not be sustainable due to the forecast medium to long-term reduction in pupils on roll.

"However, opportunities to secure further funding for SEND places will be considered should the Department for Education open future rounds for application."
