Grants aimed at encouraging people to support cycling-related activities and community engagement projects are up for grabs.

On 19 August Cumbria is hosting the opening stages of the women's Tour of Britain, and to celebrate its arrival Cumberland Council is inviting community groups to apply for funding.

Between £500 and £5,000 is available to help local organisations create activities that encourage participation, and promote cycling.

Groups have until 24 July to apply, with submissions considered on a rolling basis, although it might close earlier if funding is allocated before that date.

The council said projects focusing on increasing engagement in cycling and encouraging the inclusion of women and girls, would be among the areas considered favourably.

Also those supporting the event, through "animating and decorating" the route.

The first stage of the competition will begin and end in Cockermouth, with riders travelling 98.7 miles (158.9 km) and passing through Frizington, Whitehaven, Lowca, Workington, Flimby, Maryport, Allonby, Silloth, Wigton, Caldbeck and Aspatria.

Councillor Mark Fryer, leader of Cumberland Council, said: "We want local organisations to play a key role in creating activities that bring people together, encourage more people to get active and help communities feel part of this major sporting event.

"I would encourage eligible organisations to apply and help us create a lasting impact from the race."
