A man has been taken to hospital after he was found lying on a street in Londonderry with an unexplained "significant head injury".

Officers were called to Benevenagh Gardens in the Creggan area of Derry at 06:14 BST where the man was being treated by Northern Ireland Ambulance service staff.

He was taken to hospital for treatment and at this stage it is unclear how the man came to be injured, police said.

"We believe the man may have been lying on the ground for some time before he was located and the incident reported," Ch Insp Ian Ferriby said.

The senior officer added: "Our officers have carried out a number of enquiries so far, including speaking with residents, and I want to thank everyone who has assisted police."

Ch Insp Ferriby said he wanted to directly appeal to anyone who was in the area in the early hours on Thursday and who saw anything unusual.

Police have asked anyone with information to come forward.
