A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of his two-year-old daughter.

Kevin Kerjean, 31, is also charged with the rape and sexual assault of a girl under the age of 13.

Kerjean, a French national born in the Central African Republic, appeared at Guildford Crown Court via video-link from HMP Wandsworth and spoke via an interpreter to confirm his name.

Surrey Police confirmed that Kerjean was the father of a child who was found dead at a property in Pyrcroft Road, in Chertsey, on Thursday evening.

He was remanded into custody until the next hearing, at the same court, on 14 September.

In a statement, the police force said: "We can confirm that the victim was the daughter of Kevin Kerjean."

The victim was not named in court, but the Crown Prosecution Service later said her name was Assia Kerjean.

According to a police spokesperson, the Home Office has confirmed Kerjean legally entered the UK and applied for European Union Settled Status in December 2020.

He was granted leave to remain in the UK in March 2021 and received an extension which gave him permission to remain until March 2031.
