A temporary footbridge has been removed allowing the demolition of the original Darley Abbey Mills Bridge, which is at "high risk of collapse", to take place.

The bridge closed in May 2022 due to safety concerns and a metal structure, known as Walter's Walkway, was installed.

Derby City Council said the walkway was lifted away by a large crane on Thursday, as the project took a "significant step forward".

The council issued a warning to locals not to cross the original structure or use the river underneath, stating that any attempt to cross it "poses a severe and immediate risk to life".

"The old bridge remains in an extremely fragile, structurally compromised state," a council spokesperson said.

"It cannot support weight, and any attempt to cross it poses a severe and immediate risk to life.

"While the warm weather makes the river tempting, your safety must always take priority.

"Please act responsibly and resist the temptation to cool off in the water."

The spokesperson said the work to demolish the original bridge will now enter the "next critical phase".

Security teams will remain on-site 24/7, and the area will continue to be fenced and patrolled, they said.
