Specialist search teams are scouring the River Nene between Bedford Road and Billing Aquadrome

A search for a man seen "in difficulty" in the River Nene in Northampton has ended, police have said.

Northamptonshire Police were called at about 14:15 BST on Wednesday after a member of the public reported seeing a man struggling in the water between Bedford Road and Billing Aquadrome.

Emergency services attended but, despite searches of the stretch, no-one was found, the force said.

Detectives are now appealing for anyone who may have seen anyone in wet clothing near the area at the time to contact them.

They are also asking the male himself, if he did indeed manage to exit the river safely, to urgently get in touch to let police know he is safe.
