Driver jailed over crash that killed great-grandad

A speeding driver has been jailed for two years after a crash in Leicester killed a great-grandad and seriously injured his partner.

Aaron Singh-Dhillon was driving at more than 60mph on the A47 Hinckley Road, in the Braunstone area, when he collided with a Suzuki Alto driven by 74-year-old David Hold, police said.

Hold had safely pulled out on to the road - which has a 40mph limit - from the junction with Avery Hill, the force said, but Singh-Dhillon was unable to slow down in time and hit Hold's Suzuki Alto.

On Friday, Singh-Dhillon, 31, of Hill Field in Oadby, was sentenced after he pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving and causing serious injury by careless driving.

Hold was taken to hospital but went into cardiac arrest and died shortly after the crash. His partner, who was a passenger in the car, suffered serious injuries.

Leicestershire Police's serious collision investigation unit established Singh-Dhillon was travelling at about 62mph as he approached the junction and struck the Suzuki at about 45mph.

In a statement, Hold's family said: "David was a loving dad, twin brother, brother to an older sister, grandad and great-grandad.

"He was tragically taken too soon and will be missed greatly.

"He leaves behind ever-lasting memories and a loving family."

In August this year, Singh-Dhillon pleaded guilty to both charges.

After sentencing, he received a driving ban of five years, with a requirement to do an extended retest once the disqualification expires.
