Woman named among Britons missing in Nepal floods

A woman from has been named as one of the 33 British nationals missing after devastating flash floods in Nepal.

Fishtail Tours and Travels confirmed Leena Bector, from Slough, was among 27 travellers linked to the tour company who remain unaccounted for.

Her husband, Bhupesh Bector, told The Times: "I know that she's in Nepal for sure, so even if they find her today or tomorrow, I need to be there."

The missing Britons are among hundreds of people unaccounted for as rescue efforts continue in the Rasuwa district, which borders China's Tibet Autonomous Region. The floods struck on Wednesday after a glacier collapse triggered landslides and sent torrents of mud, water and debris downstream.

In an update on Thursday evening, Nepal Police said 389 bodies had been recovered, while the number of people injured and rescued had risen to 466.

Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) said the number of foreign nationals still out of contact had increased to 517.

Speaking to journalists during a visit to South Wales, Prime Minister Andy Burnham said: "It's a devastating picture that is emerging from what has happened in Nepal.

"Scenes that we've never seen the like of before, I don't think, certainly in terms of the scale of the devastation.

"So there is immediate action being taken. We are deploying consular support staff to the region so that British nationals will be able to access support 24/7."

He added: "An offer has been made of emergency responders to head to the region, but that's obviously a matter for the Nepalese government.

"But also we've offered £5 million to help with that response effort.

"Obviously, there are a number of British nationals who currently are thought to be missing, and we'll be providing all the support we can to their families in what is a very distressing and devastating situation."
