Burnham's '10-year mission' and 'Princess in peaks condition'

"Give me 10 years to fix Britain," is the Daily Telegraph's main headline as it previews Andy Burnham's speech on the economy. The paper says the Labour leadership contender will lay out plans for a "radical" programme of English devolution. The Times suggests this will involve Whitehall budgets being "slashed" with money diverted to mayors and local authorities.
According to the Daily Mirror, Andy Burnham's nine years as mayor of Greater Manchester "radicalised" him on the unfairness in the system as England's regions lose out to London and the South East. The Daily Mail claims that Burnham is "eyeing a potential tax raid" on middle class southerners to fund his devolution plans. An unnamed Labour MP in the Financial Times suggests colleagues in London and the south could be alienated if Burnham "overdoes it" talking about the north west.
Pictures of England Test cricket captain Ben Stokes waving his bat to the crowd after his retirement announcement make many front pages. "Over and out", is the caption in the Guardian and the Daily Telegraph, while the Sun opts for "That's all Stokes". The Daily Express says it was "entirely predictable" that his first delivery after the announcement took a New Zealand wicket. "What to make of it all", asks Michael Atherton in the Times, "dramatic and theatrical... but there was a sense that the ending was an ill fitting one too".
The Guardian reports on what it calls the "unsolved mystery" of the cremated remains left on the counter of a burger van at Newbury racecourse. Despite what is described as "extensive inquiries", no next of kin have been identified for the person named as Gary Bonsor on a sticker on the urn. He will now be laid to rest in a local churchyard.
The Daily Mirror leads on what it calls "Kate's cancer walk of hope", as it pays tribute to Catherine, Princess of Wales, for completing the Three Peaks Challenge in aid of the hospital that treated her. The Daily Express salutes what it calls her "peak performance", showing her smiling at the summit of Ben Nevis.
