Cyclist hit by e-scooter left with serious injuries

A cyclist was left seriously injured after an e-scooter rider crashed into her in Reading.

Elaine Parry was cycling with a friend at the A33 junction with Rose Kiln Lane on Sunday 2 August when the rider hit her.

Parry sustained a head injury, bruising to her face, a fracture to her upper left arm and cuts on her fingers.

Thames Valley Police is investigating the crash and is appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Speaking to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, Parry, from Tilehurst, said: "I could see that he was approaching fast. I went out so that I'd try to avoid him, but he hit me head on.

"Apparently his scooter went underneath the bike, I just didn't see, it was gone, I had hit my head on the pavement.

Parry, a mum in her 60s, said the force of the collision had thrown her over the handlebars.

She was taken to the Royal Berkshire Hospital for her injuries, but will require repeat visits.

The rider of the e-scooter did not sustain any injuries.

"I'm just not understanding why on earth he would ever do that speed for," said Parry. "Apparently he passed my friend doing about 30mph, it was just before that corner.

"He just looked at me, and he didn't say a word. I just couldn't get over it because I've just been hit by him."

It is illegal to ride a privately owned e-scooter in public, on pavements, roads or in parks.

Thames Valley Police is investigating the crash, appealing for witnesses to come forward.

A spokesperson said: "We are appealing for witnesses following a road traffic collision involving an e-scooter and a bicycle which occurred at around 4.50pm on Sunday, August 2 at the A33 junction with Rose Kiln Lane, Reading.
