Two charged with attempted murder after disorder

Two men have appeared in court following days of violent disorder in a Sheffield suburb.

Bartolomej Mizigar, 38, of Hinde Street in Sheffield and Jan Mizigar, 21, of Chequer Avenue in Doncaster, both appeared before Sheffield Magistrates' Court today charged with attempted murder and violent disorder.

The charges came as a result of unrest in the Page Hall area, with South Yorkshire Police seizing 50 weapons under stop and search powers, including a knuckle duster, a broom handle with a knife attached and prams filled with bricks.

In total, seven people, including a 37-year-old woman and a 15-year-old boy, have been arrested over the disorder on 3 and 4 August.

A woman needed hospital treatment after Monday's disorder on Willoughby Street and two men were seriously injured during Tuesday's violence which involved crowds carrying wooden bats and an assault involving metal bars.

Bartolomej and Jan Mizigar were arrested on Tuesday night following a report of a collision and assault at a petrol station in Owler Lane.

As well as the charges of attempted murder and violent disorder, Bartolomej Mizigar has also been charged with driving a motor vehicle dangerously and using a vehicle without insurance.

South Yorkshire Police said a patrol plan remained in place for Page Hall over the course of the weekend and there would continue to be a police presence in the area.

Insp James Lawson said: "No one wants to see this kind of criminality on their doorstep and I hope our policing response shows that we take the threat of disorder incredibly seriously."

Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, which was put in place on Tuesday and later extended, gives officers temporary authority to stop and search "any person or vehicle" within a specific geographic area "without needing standard reasonable suspicion".

Officers said they have carried out an estimated 130 stop searches in the area since the Section 60 was imposed on Tuesday night.

The 37-year-old woman and 15-year-old boy who were arrested on Thursday night on suspicion of assault are currently in police custody.

A 41-year-old man also arrested on Thursday night on suspicion of making threats to kill is also in police custody.

A 30-year-old man who was arrested on Monday on suspicion of assault has been bailed and a 28-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon has also been bailed.
