A man in his 40s has been shot dead in Dún Laoghaire, County Dublin.

The incident happened about 08:30 local time at Patrician Park, Kill Avenue on Sunday.

Irish broadcaster RTÉ said the man's body has been removed from the scene.

Gardaí (Irish police) said a post-mortem examination will occur in due course and have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.

Road closures are currently in operation, including at Kill Avenue and Glenageary Road Upper and local diversions are in place.

Irish Labour Party councillor Thomas Joseph said residents are "shocked and scared"

Irish Labour Party councillor Thomas Joseph told RTÉ that people in the area have been left shocked by the incident.

"It's quite unfortunate. I haven't seen anything like this before, and people are shocked and scared.

"People are living very peacefully, and especially in this area, very community-oriented people talking to each other, but obviously, this is my first time hearing something like this it's a big shock," he said.

Local resident Anthony Byrne said: "It's very strange. I can't remember anything like this before, first time I've seen anything like this."
