Pot Noodle-loving gran has snack in her coffin - and mourners get one too

A Pot Noodle-loving gran enjoyed the snacks so much she had her favourite flavour put in her coffin when she died.

Sandra Burnell, from Newport, even had an order of service covered in pictures of the instant snack, which she would eat in front of the TV every night.

The 72-year-old had been ill with heart problems and could not tolerate many foods, but she loved Pot Noodles.

The night before her send-off at Gwent Crematorium, in Croesyceiliog, funeral director Kirsty Sailes bought 52 of the beef and tomato variety for mourners.

They were placed on pews for them to take home.

Daughter Tracy, 53, a supervisor at Tata Steel in Llanwern, said: "She just really loved them. I would have one now and again, because I was there every night.

"She liked to have Pot Noodle parties, she would have people around who would have a Pot Noodle with her."

Tracy added: "She would get other goodies in for other people to eat as well. She did kind of get obsessed with them.

"With the service we did a few things around Pot Noodles. She had some put in her coffin and her order of service was all decorated with Pot Noodles."

The Pot Noodles on the pews were a surprise the funeral director thought up.

"The guests were all saying they were going to eat theirs at nine o'clock," Tracy said.

Her mum, she said, would have "loved it".

Sandra also asked for her coffin to be in her favourite colour, royal blue.

Celebrant Rachel Frank said: "This was definitely the only Pot Noodle service I have done thus far but who knows?

"It might be that after all this that more people want that."

Funeral director Kirsty Sailes said: "I think it is great that people can do a bit more now and make things more personalised."
