A former youth footballer has appeared in court charged with killing a 21-year-old man during a disturbance in Glasgow city centre, then trying to flee the country.

Daniel Colrain, 21, was found with serious injuries in Royal Exchange Square at about 03:05 on Sunday. He was taken to hospital where he died on Monday.

Luis Cameron, 19, is accused of culpable homicide by punching Colrain, causing him to fall to the ground and strike his head.

A second allegation claims Cameron, a former Partick Thistle youth goalkeeper, attempted to pervert the course of justice by booking a flight from Glasgow to Dubai later that day. He made no plea when he appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court.

It is also claimed that Cameron left the scene of the assault, attended the Royal Alexandria Hospital in Paisley and pretended that he had injured his hand by hitting a wall.

The charge goes on to allege that he later went to Glasgow Airport in an attempt to avoid arrest and prosecution.

Cameron, from Paisley, was released on bail to appear at court at a later date.

Tributes paid to Daniel Colrain after his death include a statement from his former employers, The Smiddy Bar, in the city's Cathcart.

"To know Daniel was to experience his warmth and kindness first hand," it said.

"Over the past three years at The Smiddy, he built wonderful friendships with every member of our staff and became a cherished part of our close-knit group.

"He knew all of our regulars by name, chatted with them for hours, and was a beloved presence in the community where he grew up.

"He brought so much light to our team and will be dearly, dearly missed.

Det Insp Jonny MacKinnon thanked the public for their assistance during the investigation and police inquires into the incident are ongoing.

A second 19-year-old man was previously arrested in connection with the disturbance and released pending further investigation.

Another man, aged 21, was also assaulted and suffered minor injuries.

A 20-year-old man has been charged in connection with this and is due to appear before Glasgow Sheriff Court at a later date.
