A new hospital ward is being built to provide extra beds and help patients get the care they need during busy winter periods.

The 33-bed Moulton Ward in Northampton General Hospital will open later this year.

The ward will be based in the hospital's former Intensive Care and High Dependency unit area.

"It means we can provide a better experience for patients during pressured times," said Sarah Noonan, the chief operating officer at University Hospitals of Northamptonshire.

Hospital staff were invited to suggest names for the new ward and vote for their favourite.

Moulton received the most votes and was chosen as the ward's name.

The hospital said it follows its tradition of using local place names for wards.

Moulton Parish Council chairman councillor David Aarons added: "We are absolutely delighted and honoured that Northampton General Hospital has chosen to name its new ward after Moulton."
