The Conservative opposition on a council will ask for an exception to be made to allow Ukraine's flag to be flown from the authority's buildings once more.

Reform UK-run North Northamptonshire Council decided to stop flying non-UK national flags in June 2025, which also included a ban on the rainbow flag that illustrates support for the LGBTQ+ community.

A request for Ukraine's flag to be raised on council buildings to mark the country's independence day on 24 August is set to be made at full council on Thursday.

A council spokesperson said it did "not believe exceptions should be made on a case-by-case basis" but added it fully supported the people of Ukraine.

A motion has called for the Ukrainian flag to be flown to mark its independence day

"North Northamptonshire Council has in place a clear flag flying policy which ensures a consistent and politically neutral approach to the flags displayed on council buildings," it said.

A motion put forward by Conservative group leader Helen Harrison states: "Ukraine has now been fighting for her independence and freedom against the invasion of Russia for more than four years.

"It is vital that the UK remains solidly committed to the just outcome of this war in Europe.

"Flying the flag of Ukraine from our public buildings on Ukraine independence day is a fitting way for our council to show our solidarity and continued commitment to the people of Ukraine."
