Work to remove unsafe concrete from the roof of a library is expected to take a year.

Poole Central Library is located in the Dolphin Centre where it was found that reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (Raac) was used in the roof of The Hub.

Raac is weaker than conventional concrete and is at risk of collapse, especially when it becomes wet and has inadequate steel beams to support it.

Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council said that works have begun to remove the unsafe concrete and that there is no immediate danger to visitors or staff.

BCP Council said it expected that there would be some disruption and noise at the library while works are carried out but services are operating as usual, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Cllr Andy Martin, cabinet member with responsibility for libraries, said: "Contractors working for the Dolphin Centre are beginning work to remove previously identified Raac from the roof space.

"Since this Raac was discovered last year, the library has remained open and safe to visit.

"There is no immediate risk to visitors or staff, but customers can expect a noisier environment on the library floor and for the next week there will be some disruption as staff and the contractors make preparations.

"People can continue to borrow and return books at the library, and the payment point for council services is operating as usual.

"We'll continue to review the library environment as the Dolphin Centre carries out works, which will take around one year.

"We will keep residents fully updated of any change to opening hours or services.

"Other libraries, including Hamworthy, Oakdale, Parkstone, Branksome and Broadstone will continue to welcome users as normal."

Charminster library has been shut since December 2025 after a ceiling collapse.

In March BCP Council said it would remain closed for the foreseeable future due to serious building safety concerns and the high cost of essential repairs.
