People are being invited to name a new footbridge bridge in Derbyshire.

The new footbridge in Long Eaton will link the town centre and West Park, replacing its predecessor, known as The Green Bridge, which closed in November after being in place for almost a century.

Construction of the new bridge at Broad Street, inspired by the town's lacemaking heritage, is "progressing well" and expected to be completed in autumn, according to Erewash Borough Council.

The Labour-run authority said the new "dramatic curved structure" now needed a name, and has invited the public to propose their favourites by 23:59 BST on 19 July.

Once people have put forward their favourite names for the bridge, a panel will then shortlist the names and Long Eaton Town Deal Board members will vote on the preferred name, the council said.

The new bridge at Broad Street is part of the Long Eaton Town Deal Walking and Cycling project and the authority said construction was "progressing well".

Elements of the bridge are inspired by wedding lace made in the nearby Harrington Mills and the red thread used in lacemaking to highlight a repair.

Once the bridge is completed, the person who suggested the winning name will be invited to the opening ceremony.
