Fashion outlet gutted in overnight blaze

An overnight fire has gutted a fashion outlet in Manchester closing a major road into the city.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said it was called to reports of a fire at Marc Darcy on Bury New Road in Salford at about 01:40 BST.

The outlet was "well alight" when firefighters arrived and the blaze was tackled by eight fire crews and specialist units including a turntable ladder.

A GMFRS spokeswoman said: "Crews remain in attendance as they continue to work to extinguish the fire and make the area safe."

She added: "Bury New Road is currently closed by Greater Manchester Police and residents are asked to stay away from the area and keep doors and windows closed."

An employee of the business, who did not want to be named, told the BBC staff "are very shocked".

He said the business sold high-end men's designer suits and boasted several celebrities among their customers.
