City library targeted in three arson attacks

Police are investigating three reports of arson next to a library after two vehicles and some rubbish were set on fire in Hull.

Officers said the incidents at the Avenues Library on Chanterlands Avenue occurred between Monday and Wednesday and urged anyone with information, including CCTV footage from around the time of the incident, to contact them.

Humberside Fire Service said it had attended one vehicle on fire on Monday, a "small amount" of rubbish that was burning in a doorway on Tuesday and a car fire on Wednesday.

Police said investigations were continuing to establish "the full circumstances around how the fire came to have started and identify those involved".

In a statement after the second fire, Hull City Council said The Avenues Library was temporarily closed "due to some damage to the doors and carpets".

It added that repairs were taking place and it hoped to re-open before the end of the week.

The council apologised to library users for "any inconvenience caused by this very disappointing situation".
