Months of work on A52 roundabouts confirmed

Work to upgrade two junctions on the A52 in Nottinghamshire is set to begin next month.

From Monday 7 September, utilities and telecoms companies will start to divert their infrastructure at the Wheatcroft and Nottingham Knight junctions ahead of National Highways beginning a major redesign.

The preliminary phase will run into early next year and will involve overnight closures, lane restrictions and a 40mph speed limit.

The main scheme, which will see the roundabouts' layouts changed with a cut-through installed in the middle of the islands connecting the A52, is due to begin in early 2027 and last until spring 2029.

Other work includes installing new traffic signals and improving pedestrian and cycling routes with new crossings.

National Highways project manager, Adam Gallis, said: "Work we have already completed on the A52 through Nottinghamshire has had a positive impact on reducing congestion and keeping everyone moving through the county.

"We're now ready to start the final phase of the project to upgrade the remaining two roundabouts, which will further improve commuter journeys and remove the bottleneck at these junctions.

"The new design of the junctions will create much-needed additional capacity, better connectivity and safer journeys for the thousands of drivers using this key route each day."

The preliminary work involves:

• From 7 September, work starts at the Wheatcroft roundabout for three months, with lane closures in place from Monday to Friday

• Also, from 08:00 on 21 September to 18:00 on 25 September, a full closure of a section of Flawforth Lane where it meets the A52

• Overnight closures from 25 September until 28 September, with part of the A52 Gamston Link Road closed from 20:00 to 06:00

• Four months of work at Nottingham Knight island starting in November

The wider project on the A52 began in 2021 and changes at the Bingham, Gamston, Silverdale and Stragglethorpe junctions have already been completed.

Update 2 September 2026: Following a correction from National Highways, this story has been amended to make it clear that lane closures will take place during the day as part of the Wheatcroft roundabout work.
