Removal of bridge 'at risk of collapse' complete

The original Darley Abbey Mills Bridge which was deemed to be at "high risk of collapse" has been demolished.

The bridge closed in May 2022 due to safety concerns and a temporary bridge, known as Walter's Walkway, was installed.

Walter's Walkway - which was closed in December - was removed in early July before the demolition of the original structure began.

Derby City Council said on Tuesday the bridge had been removed and work was ongoing at the site as it prepared for the reinstatement of Walter's Walkway "as soon as possible".

The council advised people to keep "well away" from the area and said security teams remained on the site.

A spokesperson for the authority said: "While the immediate danger posed by the bridge is now gone, the area still remains unsafe."
